Scoring and Seeding Guidelines

Points are awarded for artistic, technical and social merit. Entries will be judged against other entries according to artists' position in the seeding chart. The draw size of the 2005 tournament is 32 artists (1-4 v 29-32; 5-8 v. 25-28; 9-12 v 21-24; 13-16 v 17-20).

Artists will be seeded according to the whitecouch professional art ranking algorithm. This algorithm utilizes a complex mathematical formula which looks at the quantity, caliber, and scale of an artist's exhibitions at established venues over the last 52 weeks. The greatest weight being given to one-person, or 'solo' shows at established cultural venues in larger metropolitan areas during the Fall.

For example, an artist whose work was the subject of a major museum retrospective opening in Los Angeles or New York between September-November, would be seeded higher than an artist whose work was featured in a group show at an alternative space in South Carolina in July. Unseeded artists may be added to the draw as wildcards (space permitting, and at the discretion of tournament officials).

Only one artist will prevail through 5 rounds of judging to win the Unreal Tournament. That artist begins the following season as top seed.
